Fall Series: Advanced Practice
Class Description
No two dancers have the same body and so we must each develop an understanding of how to best work with our unique structure. This dance technique class draws upon principles of neuromuscular training and the study of anatomy to help dancers find proper joint alignment, build balanced strength and mobility, and achieve clear, strong, expressive movement in a healthy way. Building upon our technical preparation throughout the class, phrase work changes levels, moving into and away from the floor, exploring turns and using unexpected moments of suspension as opportunities to experience the dynamic play of freedom and control. By bringing dancers into a state of deep listening and self-inquiry, this work fosters an adaptive responsiveness to the precarious nature of dance performance. The goal is to become a good partner to one’s own dancing and growth, developing an ever more accurate understanding of “the body” in general as a path to a nuanced understanding of our particular bodies and how we wish to use them. Together, we approach our work with curiosity and humor.
