Foundations℠ One
This 12-week online course will provide you with a solid understanding of basic musculoskeletal anatomy for dance and movement. It will help you begin to develop the ability to see movement through an anatomical lens, allowing you to refine your skills as a performer and teacher. You will:
Learn the basics of injury. What is injury? How do we think about prevention and recovery? How do we talk in an honest and useful way about risk in dance?
Explore class and exercise design. What makes a great class or an effective movement exercise? What structures and choices will create the results you are seeking?
Cuing: how can our language choices speak more directly to the body’s structure and promote quick and stable change in a dancer’s performance?
Articulate your teaching or performance philosophy. How do you see your role as an educator or coach? What is your vision for the dancers you work with and what are your responsibilities?
Structure
Every Week:
An educational video lecture, released at the beginning of each week
Weekly live meeting, approximately 2.5 hours, made up of:
One-hour movement practice class, led by Anneke and related to the week’s lecture material
A Q&A period to discuss, workshop, and apply the material covered in the week’s lecture will follow practice class
Weekly video of movement exercises or tasks to practice independently. The practice material will reinforce the lecture material covered.
Near-weekly assignments that offer the student an opportunity to apply what they have learned and develop their skills of seeing, sensing and strategizing the moving body through an anatomical lens. The goal is to continually reinforce and support the students’ mastery of the course material.
Additional Meetings & Assignments
Two individual check-in meetings with Anneke over the duration of the course to discuss questions and guide study
Guest lectures from physical therapists, biochemists, nutritionists, and others
Reading and reflection assignments
Practice teaching & observation. For experienced professionals, this may look like bringing in students or dancers you work with currently and problem solving with the group
